What is critical thinking?


Critical thinking is a well-used term, but sometimes there is not a precise definition for it. Politicians, educators, psychologists, and parents stress the importance of critical thinking development in students, but what exactly is being referred to when talking about “critical thinking”? In this article we are going to talk about critical thinking, its importance, and how charter schools foster the development of critical thinking skills in students.


What do we mean with ‘Critical thinking’?

The ‘critical thinking’ concept has evolved through time. It was first documented by Plato in his dialogues with Socrates. However, the definition has changed since those times. A new definition can be summarized as it follows:

Critical thinking is the ability and the use of skills in order to think clearly and rationally about what to do and what to believe.
