School Uniform
& Dress Code

The dress code is established to help ensure an atmosphere conducive to study. SDA expects its students to dress in neat, attractive attire, reflecting pride in themselves and in their school. It is the responsibility of both parents and students to ensure compliance with the dress code. We expect that personal appearance be non-disruptive to the learning atmosphere. Acceptable school apparel is as follows:

Grade school students (K-5th grade):
  • Navy blue bottoms pants, slacks, shorts, skirts, capris, skorts, or jumpers. Shorts, skirts, skorts, capris, and jumpers should be no shorter than 3 inches from the student’s knees. Yoga pants and/or leggings are not permitted. We recommend belts for slacks and shorts that have belt loops.

  • White or red tops long-sleeve or short-sleeve shirts. Any red shirt must be true red (no maroon, burgundy, or orange-red). Polo-style, knit shirts are preferred. Shirts must have collars and be of solid color; no print or logos, tank tops, t-shirts, or bared midriffs allowed. T-shirts with school logos are the only exceptions to the rule, and only on special occasions such as field trips or Fridays. Shirts and blouses must be tucked in at all times.

  • Monogrammed polo shirts are available as an optional uniform shirt.
Junior High students (6th-8th grade):
  • Khaki bottoms pants, slacks, shorts, skirts, capris, skorts, or jumpers. Shorts, skirts, skorts, capris, and jumpers should be no shorter than 3 inches from the student’s knees. Yoga pants and/or leggings are not permitted. We recommend belts for slacks and shorts that have belt loops.

  • White or navy tops long-sleeve or short-sleeve shirts.

All students:
  • Students may wear navy blue or white cardigans or pullover sweaters. Navy blue or white crew or knee socks can be worn.

  • Hats, visors, or caps are not permitted indoors. Visors and caps worn must point forward when worn outdoors.

  • Coats of any color may be worn to and from school, but not in the classroom.

  • All clothing must fit proportionally to the child, no oversized or baggie clothing.

  • Shoes should be consistent with our conservative dress code: Solid color, without the propensity to attract undue attention. All shoes must be athletic shoes with acceptable colors of black, white, and/or blue (no prints). The soles of the shoes should not make black marks on the tile floors. No open-toe sandals, flip-flops, or boots.

  • Remember: With the exception of the school logo, no logos, brand names, or printing of any kind may be visible on or through outer clothing.

  • Upon request, the school office provides a list of places offering these various clothing items.
Additional Dress Code Standards

(The following guidelines remain in effect for Casual Days.):

  • All clothing should be in good condition, clean and have finished hemlines.

  • Hair should be neat and combed. Accessories such as headbands, barrettes, rubber bands, or ponytail holders should be color-coordinated with the school colors. The dress code prohibits any accessories with the potential to draw undue attention to a student. Likewise, SDA prohibits unconventional colors or hairstyles (e.g., mohawk, spiked hair, or any colored hair); they create distractions from learning.

  • Jewelry, makeup, and accessories: Plain ‘post type’ earrings may be worn, but only one earring per ear. No hoop or dangling earrings. No students may wear make-up of any kind during a regular day. No chains, jewelry, or ‘chap stick’ type products allowed.

Think deeply.
Create wildly.

We teach a grade higher than most Arizona schools, but our curriculum is much more than that. We focus on instilling an ability to learn but also to think deeply and create wildly.
