#1 Charter School in Arizona (ADE, 2026)

Our Founder

Dr. Anjum Majeed

I grew up in a family that deeply valued the pursuit of knowledge, a love of learning, and service to others. Learning was a lifelong pursuit, and contributing to others’ well-being was understood as a responsibility of citizenship. These values have guided my life and work.

Dr. Anjum Majeed, founder of Self Development Academy

I earned a bachelor’s degree in Zoology, followed by graduate studies in nutrition and biochemistry leading to a Master of Science degree. As my interests turned toward how children learn, I pursued a second Master’s degree in Educational Administration and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership.

For nearly four decades, I have worked to translate research into practice. I founded Self Development Preschool, a private preschool in Mesa, Arizona, in 1988, and later established Self Development Academy–Mesa, a tuition-free public charter school offering a rigorous curriculum. SDA–Mesa has consistently earned state and national recognition, including Niche’s #1 public K–8 school in America (2026) and, once again, Arizona’s #1 charter school, based on Arizona Department of Education data (2026). The Academy expanded into high school in 2026–2027, offering a rigorous, college-preparatory program.

ABC15 News: Arizona School Rankings

Believing that every child deserves the opportunity to reach their potential, I established Self Development Academy–Phoenix in an underserved community. The school earned an A rating last year.

My continuing interests in cognitive science, early childhood development, and foundational mathematics reflect my curiosity about how children learn and how we can teach them more effectively.

Beyond the classroom, I founded a nonprofit serving families in need that continues to thrive nearly three decades later and helped revitalize a children’s theater that now has a permanent home.

I believe academic achievement is only one measure of a meaningful education. Curiosity, critical thinking, character, and compassion are equally important. I consider it a privilege to have spent my life helping children discover their abilities, recognize their potential, and understand the difference they can make in others’ lives.
